Beyond the Retreat
Southern Evia is one of Greece's best-kept secrets — an area of wild natural beauty, rich history, and authentic charm, just a short ferry ride from Athens. Unlike the more touristy islands, this region offers a rare combination of dramatic mountain landscapes, pristine coastline, and genuine Greek village life.
The charming town of Karystos sits at the heart of it all, cradled by a sweeping bay and backed by the imposing Mount Ochi. With Venetian castles, ancient marble quarries, lush gorges, and some of the clearest waters in Greece, there's something here for every type of traveller.
A stunning 10km trail through lush plane trees, waterfalls, and natural pools on Mount Ochi. The ancient cobbled path descends from 950m altitude to a remote Aegean beach. Part of the Natura 2000 protected area — a must for nature lovers.
A 13th-century Venetian fortress built from distinctive red stone, perched in the foothills of Mount Ochi. The short hike up rewards with panoramic views over the entire Karystos bay — especially magical at sunset.
Mysterious ancient limestone structures with pyramid-shaped roofs, believed to be sanctuaries to Zeus or Hera from the 5th century BC. These megalithic buildings continue to puzzle archaeologists and reward adventurous hikers.
A picturesque seaside town with neoclassical architecture, a lively harbour promenade, the Venetian Bourtzi tower, an archaeological museum, and wonderful waterfront tavernas and cafés. Famous since ancient times for its prized marble quarries.
The windswept cape of southern Evia — a dramatic landscape of wild cliffs, small rivers, and an impressive waterfall at Lovers' Bridge. Remote beaches with deep blue water and scattered villages create a feeling of untouched Greece.
Southern Evia blends mainland and island cuisine — fresh seafood, traditional goat casseroles, handmade kourkoubines pasta, local honey, and wines from the Karystia Gi vineyard. Pair it all with a glass of ouzo at a seaside taverna.
